It seems to me that we must clean up our past, so that we can see clearly
what needs to be "cleaned up" in our present. It seems to me that simply
rearranging the present while ignoring the past is like sweeping the dust
under the carpet. Without the past there is no present, and if the present
is to be made better than it is, it cannot happen without acknowledging the
things that have accrued from the past that may be hindering or obstructing
the present.
