Consider yourself backed up. The problem with the material is that it was
written for good Victorians who, if they were told the truth about the
value-free universe would have freaked seriously bad.

Whenever anyone attempts to take materials out of the temporal context in
which they were written they get into real trouble because ideas change and
things that the Victorians would have considered great virtues our period,
would, for the most part, consider great silliness if not downright evil.

It should be borne in mind that most of the philosophical movements that
influenced this century grew up as a violent reaction to precisely those
concepts of virtue. There is something about the Victorian ideal that
offends the human soul.
