There should have been a question mark after "sane person".

Rukmini suffered from being around people who believed too much and thought
too little, but she should have had sense enough to at one point or another
guess that taffy was being pulled.

I find anyone who thinks they are an arhat very difficult to take seriously.

But then I take very little seriously.
