Letters are no different than anything else.  Precipitation
of any physical object is magic, pure and simple.  Of
course, if your into chaos magic then the chances are
pretty high that many of the words will be mispelled :-)

PS Personally, although I do believe in the possibility
of precipitating letters, I doubt that all of the MLs
were actually precipitated.  On the other hand, it doesn't
really matter to me much one way or the other.
