Re: Researching Mother Goddesses

Perhaps the one person who popularized the mother goddess in
modern times was Marija Alseikaite Gimbutas, the late professor
of archeology at UCLA. The books that she wrote that are of
interest are THE CIVILIZATION OF THE GODDESS (San Francisco:
Harper, 1991) and THE LANGUAGE OF THE GODDESS (SF: Harper, 1991).
Going back to the 19th century, the one scholar who emphasized
the the importance of the mother goddess (as distinct from the
male sky god) was theSwiss anthropologist Johann Jakob Bachofen
in his work DAS MUTTERRECHT.
